Our Approach to the Land

Ecological Outcome Verification, known as EOV, is an independently measured framework that assesses the real health of land over time. Rather than focusing on what inputs are used or avoided, EOV looks at outcomes. What is happening in the soil. How water moves through the landscape. Whether ecosystems are improving or declining.

We chose EOV because it prioritises transparency and accountability. It is not self assessed and it is not based on intention. It relies on repeatable, on ground measurement and long term observation to understand how a landscape is truly functioning.

At its core, EOV allows us to farm with clarity. It gives us evidence to support decisions, challenges assumptions, and ensures the way we care for this land today supports its long term resilience.

Cargo Road Wines is the first winery in Australia and the world to achieve EOV certification.

Measuring What Matters

At Cargo Road Wines, EOV is measured across ten monitored sites located throughout the property. These sites represent different vineyard blocks and landscape features, allowing for an honest and accurate view of ecological performance.

Each site is assessed using the same independent framework, creating consistency and transparency in how progress is tracked. Results are compared over time, not against an idealised standard but against the land itself and how it is changing.

These monitored sites are clearly identified and shared around the winery. What you see is what we measure. This openness is central to EOV and to how we approach farming.

EOV does not claim perfection. Agriculture is dynamic and seasonal. What EOV provides is evidence, accountability and a pathway for continuous improvement.

While EOV focuses on outcomes rather than inputs, the way we farm still matters deeply to us.

James is thoughtful and deliberate about every decision made in the vineyard. Wherever possible, organic and natural products are used, with a strong preference for practices that support soil life, plant balance and long term ecosystem health.

We are not certified organic. Certification can be complex and, at times, restrictive, particularly in a variable climate. Instead, we take a responsive and considered approach that allows us to act in the best interest of the vineyard when needed.

Inputs are used sparingly and only when necessary. The aim is always to minimise intervention, protect the broader system and support long term resilience rather than force short term outcomes.

By combining thoughtful input choices with independently measured outcomes, we are able to farm with both care and accountability. This approach is not about claiming perfection but about remaining honest, transparent and open to learning.

For us, EOV is not an endpoint. It is an ongoing commitment to listening to the land, responding with intention and farming in a way that respects both place and future generations.
