At Cargo Road Wines, the vineyard leads the way.
Established in 1983, Cargo Road Wines is one of the oldest vineyards in the Orange region. High on the northern slopes of Mount Canobolas in Orange NSW, the vines grow slowly and naturally in deep red basalt soils shaped by altitude, seasons and care rather than chemicals. This cool climate environment allows fruit to ripen with balance and clarity, guided by place rather than intervention.
Cargo Road Wines is the life’s work of winemaker and farmer James, whose approach has always been shaped by listening to the land first. From the earliest plantings, James was drawn to this site for its elevation, soils and sense of quiet potential. Rather than imposing a formula, his focus has been on observation, patience and allowing the vineyard to find its own balance over time.

Our approach is holistic and regenerative, built around working with nature instead of against it. Sheep move through the vineyard to naturally manage ground cover, bees thrive across the property, and every element of the landscape plays a role in one connected, living system. What happens above ground is always informed by what is happening below it, starting with healthy, biologically active soil.

It begins with clean air, living soils, thoughtful hands and respect for natural cycles. We focus on honest expression of site, allowing each variety to reflect the season it was grown in and the place it comes from. Our commitment to transparency and accountability led us to become the first winery in Australia and the world to achieve Ecological Outcome Verification certification.
EOV is an independently measured, outcomes based framework that assesses real ecological health rather than inputs or intentions. It measures four key markers soil health, water cycle function, mineral cycling and biodiversity using on ground data collected across ten monitored sites on our property. These sites are openly shared and independently assessed, ensuring our practices are not just well intentioned, but proven.
